Se o Anjo Exterminador tivesse rosto, talvez fosse o de St. Vincent. Será talvez exagero e heresia dizê-lo, claro, mas, ao ouvir a sua música, percebemos que o semblante angelical e delicado de Annie Clarke é estilhaçado por uma aura de ironia, agressividade e enigmatismo que exala das suas canções. Mais das suas letras, já que a voz naïf – a par do seu rosto – é elemento de desequilíbrio nessa dualidade. “Strange Mercy” segue o rastilho deixado por “Actor” (2009) e acaba por soar ainda mais catártico e cáustico. “Gotta get young fast gotta get young quick, gotta make this last if it makes me sick” e com a guitarra mais assertiva. Um verdadeiro exercício subversivo jogado nas malhas do indie-rock, pós-punk, electro-jazz, que dá a conhecer uma feminilidade ora maternal (”Strange Mercy”), ora adolescente e insegura (”Cheerleader”), mas sempre intrigante.
