Harvey exerce aqui o seu direito em duas versões com velocidades diferentes para este original de 1981 também tocado a velocidades diferentes ao longo dos anos. O maxi fez parte da operação da Mo’Wax para reapresentar ao mundo os Liquid Liquid, reunindo os seus EPs num álbum em 1997. Nessa altura (97-99) saíram alguns maxis com remisturas de Cut Chemist, UNKLE, Psychonauts e um maxi inteiro só com re-edits de Harvey, um pouco já mega-star no circuito house por essa altura. No lado A o passo é mais lento, no lado B mais rápido, mas sempre preservando o funk esquelético do original, uma faixa pura de percussão e voz de comando. Preferência para o lado A, mais hipnótico, rude e com espaço para um kick mais forte.

Álbum muito aguardado há demasiado tempo e que, basicamente, reúne o que temos vindo a escutar em maxis ao longo do último ano. Locussolus é DJ Harvey e esta é a sua visão actual. O disco liga o som baleárico pelo qual é basicamente conhecido hoje em dia com uma sensibilidade de clube mais acessível a quem o conhece dos anos 90 e, por exemplo, quem assistiu ao seu set no Lux, em Lisboa, há alguns meses. “Gunship”, “Tan Sedan” e “I Want It”, os lados A dos três maxis saídos até agora em vinil, soam até algo incaracterísticos para quem está familiarizado com Harvey, querendo isto dizer que soam mais electrónicos do que se esperaria. Todos são faixas de clube com sentido épico e que chegaram às pistas sem aviso directamente evoluídos a partir da cena electro-house que dominou entre 2003 e 2005. No outro pólo, algumas faixas próximas do que se ouviu no álbum de Map Of Africa, embora aqui com uma natureza bem mais cósmica. “Little Boots”, “Throwdown”, “Bloodbath” (inédito) e “Next To You”. Esta última dá acesso a um magnífico momento pop com linha ácida domesticada, vozes masculina (Harvey) e feminina em alegre desafio que pode ser tomado como base para as actividades deste Verão. Como bónus, o CD inclui quatro remisturas: um dub de Harvey para “Throwdown”, Andrew Weatherall reinterpreta “Gunship”, Emperor Machine mexem em “Little Boots” e Lindstrom & Prins Thomas alteram substancialmente “I Want It”, transformando a faixa numa delícia disco completa com sopros que intensificam o groove e uma passagem incrível por “Venus” das Bananarama – essencial. A edição em vinil inclui apenas as quatro remisturas.

E pronto. Harvey regressa a Portugal e ao Lux depois de ter praticamente aberto a discoteca lisboeta em 1998. Nos anos que passaram gerou-se uma aura de lenda em seu redor e os discos que usa nos seus sets são automaticamente alvo de grande interesse e especulação no mercado de usados.
Amanhã, sexta-feira 30 de Julho, tocará no Lux. Não percam o set do Tiago, também.
A entrevista que se segue foi feita há dias por email e caiu-nos no colo por cortesia da Isilda Sanches (Rádio Oxigénio) e do Lux. Mantemos a versão original em inglês mas se tiverem alguma dificuldade peçam a versão traduzida (está quase pronta).

You are a cult figure. Do you feel like one? Who is a cult figure for you?
It is nice to have the adoration of people for doing what I do but I don’t consider myself a cult leader. To me the definition of cult leader would have to be someone more like Jim Jones.

What made you want to be a DJ?
I had become disillusioned with the group / band format, DJing allowed me to run the show on my own terms.  Seeing what DJ’s were doing and the effect they were having on people solo was inspiring to me at a young age.

How different is the DJ/music scene nowadays from back when you started?
I would say the basic idea is still the same but now global communication has consolidated the disco family, we can be thousands of miles apart and sharing a sentiment at the tap of a keyboard.

What’s better: being a DJ or having a band? Is there a reason?
Both DJing and being in a band allow me to fully express myself musically in different ways. Both are still very important to me in their own way.

How important is surf in your life? Would you have moved to LA/Hawaii if it wasn’t for surf?
I enjoy surfing very much, it is a meditation for me, California and Hawaii allow me to indulge in this activity, but there were other draws to moving there too.  There are many other places in the world I am fortunate enough to surf, Portugal was an early surf spot for me and I’m looking forward to getting in the ocean there again

What is thirtyninehotel?
A community orientated multi-media space. In China Town Honolulu Hawaii.

Back when you were a punk kid, John Peel playing your records must have felt pretty amazing. Do you remember that when you play other people’s stuff – do you feel it can make a difference? And are you in any way pressured to play any records?
I have no pressure to play any particular music and am very fortunate in that but I do like to play the productions of my friends, it helps that some of them are making outstanding music right now, but I’m lucky in that my crowd seem to come with open ears.

Do you regularly check the price of your records (the ones you make and the ones you play) on eBay?
I realize that my productions and playlist can fetch a high price on ebay, I don’t pay too much attention to it although it does amuse me greatly.

You’re somehow the father of all the disco, balearic, re-edit revival thing (not to mention the beard) that’s been going for the last few years. How do you feel about that (being the man responsible and the scene itself)?
There’s no masterplan behind my career, I’m just doing what I love. I think the scene in general is healthy and we are all inspired by one another, I did a re-edit recently after leaving that genre alone for quite some time. I like to utilize many tools when I DJ to change or affect the music as I play it to give people something unique, after all, with the access to music people have now they could just stay home and party in their homes. If  people come out and are inspired to go and create something of their own after hearing me play then I am all for it.  As far as the beard is concerned, hair just grows out of my face at an alarming rate.

Weirdest DJ moment ever:
Some of them are a little to odd to put into print.

Best Dj experience until now:
Crowd surfing in Japan was a definite high point, but the last gig I did is always a high point for me.

Which are the basic conditions for a great party?
Loose women, Freaks and Balloons.

First record you ever bought (or remember doing so):
‘I Can Do It’ by The Rubettes or ‘Hey Rock N Roll’ by Showaddywaddy or ‘Tiger Feet’ by Mud.

A record you’re looking for:

Rub N Tug, Eric D, House of House, Rune Lindbaek, M. Pittman, Justin Vander…something.

Imagine a time warp makes you able to have a band/share a Dj booth with anyone alive or dead, who would you choose for partners?
Stalin on the left, Hitler on the right, everyone would be sure to pay attention. Mother Teresa doing front of house to EQ out the evil frequencies.

Best surf spot:
Queens Surf Waikiki is pretty hard to beat.

Words of advice for young people:
The Past is History the Futures a Mystery.

O último ano editorial tem sido, a um certo nível, dominado pela presença e influência de DJ Harvey. Os bootlegs da série Black Cock, depois seguidos das reedições oficiais, a remistura para House Of House e o lançamento da editora International Feel. Mais importante que tudo isto talvez seja o facto de se anunciar que Harvey pode, finalmente, sair dos Estados Unidos e regressar sem ter problemas com a Imigração. Não sendo muito claro quem é quem e quem faz o quê na International Feel, Locussolus é descrito como um projecto de Harvey. Dois lados distintos, tech-disco bleepy mais electrónico do que a música que a ele normalmente associamos, e um lado B lento e cósmico, com suficiente freak-out de guitarra para o poder colocar no exacto centro da cabine de Baldelli sem precisar de diminuir o pitch ou mexer nas rotações. Precisa de tempo para se instalar e, depois, parece uma jam entre Steve Hillage e Conrad Schnitzler.

Harvey dizia numa entrevista na Red Bull Academy que o nome Black Cock era simplemente a melhor e mais poderosa simbologia que encontraram para Sexo. Humor britânico e também sarcasmo de Harvey, que gosta de se meter com quem o leva muito a sério. Como complemento, dizer apenas, para quem desconhece, que a figura no logo da editora é do grande Foghorn Leghorn da Warner Bros.
Muita história e mitologia em torno desta famosa série de edits feitos por DJ Harvey/Gerry Rooney nos anos 90. Os originais atingem valores bárbaros na net e estas reedições vêm acabar com a especulação de preços mas também reavaliar a pertinência destes edits num mercado saturado desse tipo de discos. O fulgor desta música nos anos 90 tinha sobretudo a ver com a manutenção de uma ideia de underground quando a house já estava completamente assimilada pela indústria e os grandes clubes atraiam milhares de pessoas todos os fins de semana. Harvey, Joey Negro, Idjut Boys e outros alteravam música para melhor se munirem de ferramentas que pudessem ser exclusivas, actualizar música de clube de outras épocas para o formato actual de então, sem significar a adição de componentes contemporâneos, apenas os ocasionais ecos, reverbs ou repetições de sequências dos próprios originais. Algumas bombas de pista baseadas em percussão (”On The Nest”) mas também excursões aos limites da galáxia (”Cosmic”) para sets mais aventureiros. São ferramentas para DJs e, até pelo carácter de lenda que já possuem, são já igualmente manifestos de uma cultura de dança que se mantém viva e prolonga a herança de históricos como Danny Krivit ou Ron Hardy, por exemplo. Harvey pode ser acusado de fazer edits que Ron Hardy já tinha feito dez anos antes (”No Way Back”) mas não se pode retirar-lhe o fogo com que o fez e a energia contagiante com que transmitia a sua postura particular num universo house demasiado formatado. Alguns pedaços podem ser ouvidos aqui.
